Long-Tailed Macaque Conservation

“If the world of nonhuman primates offers an emblem of the tensions of modernity, it’s Macaca fascicularis, the long-tailed macaque. This alert, adaptable Asian species is one of the world’s most familiar monkeys, but also among the most sorely taken for granted…its current population status is poorly known but, by reliable accounts, combines the good news of broad distribution with the bad news of declining numbers.”

I provide film and photography support to the Long-tailed Macaque Project, an international initiative, collaboration, and registered charity aiming to raise awareness about and conserve vulnerable long-tailed macaque populations in South and Southeast Asia. Despite being one of the most familiar monkeys, Long-tailed Macaque populations are on the decline and under pressure from capture for medical research, hunting for consumption, the pet trade and culling due to human-macaque conflict.
